Shawnee State Park gearing up November programs

WEST PORTSMOUTH — Shawnee State Parks is announcing a schedule of Nature Programs and events for the month of November.

Naturalist Programs Buzzard’s Roost Hike, Nov. 2, 23

This National Natural Landmark at the Edge of Appalachia Preserve reveals a magnificent view 400 ft. above the Ohio Brush Creek Valley. The trail is moderate three miles round trip.

Meet at the Lodge Lobby at noon. Wear comfortable boots and dress in layers.

Fireside Chat, Nov. 8, 29

Visit with the naturalist in the Lodge Lobby at 6 p.m. to learn of area attractions, park trails or just share stories.

Red Rock Hike, Nov. 23

Get a behind the scenes tour of this beautiful red rock bluff overlooking the Ohio Brush Creek Valley. This private hike cannot be accessed without permission from Edge of Appalachia Preserve staff. The half mile climb to the top is very steep and difficult due to rolling rocks under foot. Bring a walking stick and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Meet at the Lodge Lobby at noon.

Section Hike, Nov. 30

Meet at the Lodge Lobby at noon for a brisk hike on the Shawnee Backpack Trail.

The hike will be on rough terrain, bring your walking sticks, wear comfortable hiking shoes and dress in layers.

Hikers should also bring snacks and water.

Everyone Welcome including pets. Hiking distance will be based on skill levels attending. No hike will exceed seven miles.

Shawnee Stories, Nov. 3

Sit by the fireside and journey back in time with local Shawnee tribal elder and storyteller, Great Elk where you will be led from pre-history to modern times, sharing lessons learned and some of Great Elk’s Shawnee-Mide’ collection of artifacts and ceremonial items. Meet at the Shawnee Lodge at 1 p.m.

Suggestions from the Naturalist, Nov. 17

Naturalist Jenny Richards suggests stargazing under the new moon step outside and enjoy the night sky and fresh air.

Good places with low light pollution include the flood wall at the nature center parking lot and copperhead lookout on Forest Rd. 6.

Leonids Meteor Shower take the family outdoors to enjoy the night sky. Look east toward the constellation Leo after midnight to observe 40 meteors per hour soaring through the sky.

AT&T Eulett Center After Hours Series, Nov. 14, 21

These are free public talks from 5:15-6:15 about interesting things in Adams County. No registration necessary. Participants may come the day of the event to Eulett Center, 4274 Waggoner Riffle Road in West Union.
