Officials with the Lawrence Scioto County Solid Waste Management District are pleased with the response they received from area resident during the 8th annual House Hold Hazardous Waste held last weekend.
The event was held Saturday, Sept. 28 at Dow Chemical/Americas Styrenics in Ironton.
“We had 270 cars throughout the course of the event, that comes out to about 67 cars an hour,” said Dan Palmer, Director of the Lawrence-Scioto County Solid Waste Management District. “For the first time ever we filled up a trailer with used tires and had to have a second trailer brought in.”
During the event 16 batteries were collected, 1,009 tires, 1,000 pounds of aerosols and flammable items, 12,000 pounds of paint related materials, 2,200 pounds of oil, 54 pounds of propane tanks, 1,200 pounds of toxic solids, 2,000 pounds of toxic liquids, 455 pounds of environmentally hazardous substances, 255 pounds of fluorescent bulbs and 69 pounds of pharmaceuticals.
Of the 270 cars, 145 were from Scioto County and 125 were from Lawrence County. Of the cars from Scioto County, the most came from Portsmouth with 47 from the city and 31 coming from Wheelersburg.
Palmer said each of the drivers were asked how they heard about the event and 200 of them responded from the newspaper, 23 from radio, six from the solid waste website, 17 from promotional brochures, 17 from friends and seven from Dow employees.
“We are very pleased with this year’s turnout. I’m sure my board will let me continue to have this event. It’s costly but, in the long run, it’s worth it,” Palmer said.
The 2012 HHW saw 222 vehicles. A total of 39 batteries were collected along with 986 tires, 24,000 pounds of latex paint, 1,000 pounds of toxic solids and liquids, 150 pounds of alkaline batteries and 48 pounds of fluorescent bulbs along with many other items.
