Tickets will soon be available for the upcoming premiere of the documentary, Beyond These Walls, highlighting the Portsmouth Murals and the development behind them.
A premiere is set for Nov. 2 at the Vern Riffe Center For the Arts on the campus of Shawnee State University. Though this is a free event tickets, are required and can be obtained starting on Sept. 23 at the McKinley Box Office.
Dr. John Lorentz and his son Nathan of Lorentz Productions have finished production on the film titled “Beyond These Walls.”
Lorentz said before the premiere a fundraising reception is being planned.
“This will be a private reception with a charge, proceeds will go towards the ongoing maintenance costs of the murals,” John Lorentz said.
He said the reception is sponsored and organized by Portsmouth Murals, Inc. and more details should be coming soon.
John Lorentz said the film is about building community through public art.
“It tells a story in which the major theme is the role that public art has to play in developing a sense of community. We’re really looking at is the interaction of the community and viewers with the wall,” John Lorentz said. “Part of that story is how did this (Portsmouth Murals) come into creation. How do you take a blank piece of concrete and turn it into something beautiful that people react to and are connected to in someway.”
He said Robert Dafford, among others who contributed to be making of the film, is anticipated to be in attendance during the premiere.
He said they were aiming at producing this documentary similar to “River Voices,” which documents the 1937 flood locally.
“It’s local history, that people anywhere can look at and identify with because it really is a universal story of how individuals in communities cope with natural disasters,” John Lorentz said.
