On Thursday the Scioto County Commissioners approved a grant application to the Ohio Historical Society for nearly $30,000 to fix part of the courthouse that’s falling down.
“We’re applying for a grant through the Ohio Historical Society for repairs to the courthouse, since this is a historical building. The grant is for $17,805 and the local match would be $11,870 for a total of $29,675,” said Mike Crabtree, Chairman of the Scioto County Commissioners.
He said if the county is successful in receiving the grant, they would be used to fix the edge of the courthouse roof that’s crumbling.
“There have been some incidents of small chips coming off of stone on the roof of the courthouse. We’re concerned because we would not want someone to get injured from that,” Crabtree said. “One (chip) did fall on the Sixth Street side of the building in late spring or early summer that was considerable in size and could have done some serious injury.”
He said this has been caused by the way in which the roof is anchored to the building.
“When they put a flat roof on a building there is a medal strips installed around the roof to anchor it to the building. In some areas that (strip) was attached to close to the edge. When it’s attached to close to the edge, it has a tendency to crack and has overtime comes loose and as a result some of those are falling to the ground,” Crabtree said.
He said even though most of the chips that are falling are small in size, it’s still a hazard and needs to be fixed.
When asked about what preventative measures the county is currently taking while they wait for word on the grant, Crabtree said, “What is going to be done to repair it, will be the preventative measures.”
Crabtree said the work will include detaching the metal strip that holds the edge of the roof to the building, make the repairs and then reattach that further away from the edge of the courthouse.
No indication was given as to when the county would receive the grant if approved.
