Cars were lined up along Second Street in Portsmouth on Monday, but it wasn’t a Labor Day traffic jam — it was the 42nd Annual Antique and Collectors Car Show.

Mike Evans, president of the Scioto Antique Motor Club, said this is the club’s annual one-time gathering.

“People like to collect cars and just bring them out and show their cars. Show off what they got. It’s like any club or organization, we get together. I don’t show mine much, but I do drive it. Some people like to show and drive and cruise. There’s a camaraderie. Everybody knows just about everybody,” Evans said.

Registration began at 9 a.m., and within minutes the streets were already filling up with classic cars and trucks. About 150 collectors participate each year, when the weather cooperates. Last year’s event was rained on, but the skies were clear and sunny Monday morning. The vehicles were all divided into 31 categories, including those such as Ford, Chevy, Production, Camaro/Firebird, Trucks, Street Rod, Mustang, Street Machine, Unrestored Original, and Top 10 from 1981 to present. First and second places were awarded in each of the categories, and judging was conducted by the Scioto Antique Motor Club and the Iron City clubs.

Dennis Massey Jr., of Muletown, brought out his 1967 Malibu Supersport in marina blue, with a 502 big block. He bought it mostly finished, but did put a little extra work into it with power brakes, wheels, exhaust, bucket seats, and console. He said it’s an ongoing thing, never really finished.

“Just about all my life I’ve been into cars,” he said. “I come here for the food and for the camaraderie. There’s a lot of friends here, and we go to a lot of car shows and different cruise-ins throughout the area, supporting the good things they do.”
