One of the nation’s favorite events is one of the area’s favorite events as well. Special Olympics has a special place in the hearts of Americans and Scioto County residents. One of the things that makes Special Olympics locally possible is the Annual Special Olympics Walkathon. The Seventh Annual Scioto County Special Olympics Walkathon is scheduled for Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Tracy Park.

Julie Monroe, coordinator for the Scioto County Special Olympics and director of Community Services at the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities (SCBDD), said the event helps raise money to support various activities of the Special Olympics teams, throughout the year.

“This is our annual kick-off for a full season of events,” Monroe said. “Not only does this event serve as a fundraiser for Special Olympics, but we also use this opportunity to share information on Special Olympics and SCBDD services. There are also activities to take part, throughout the event, for the whole family.”

Last year the event raised nearly $2,000 and had more than 200 participants who had to dodge the raindrops to participate, but participate they did.

“We are excited to kick off our new season of activities, which includes basketball, volleyball and bowling. We invite everyone to come and join us and enjoy the day,” Monroe said.

In addition to the walk, food, games, activities and various give-aways will take place throughout the day.
