After storms rolled through the area Wednesday evening, bad fortune followed for some motorists as three cars were involved in what Portsmouth Police at the scene said was “very nearly a head-on collision.”

At around 8:30 p.m., three cars maneuvering through the intersection of Gallia Street and Kendall Avenue collided, causing severe damage to two of the three cars involved. A dark-colored Mitsubishi Eclipse appeared to be totaled and the airbags in a white Pontiac Sunfire had been deployed. A black Chevy Tracker was also involved in the accident, but suffered only superficial damage.

Sergeant Joe Shupert of the Portsmouth Police Department along with several other officers responded to the scene of the accident where, according to Shupert, four people from two of the vehicles were being transported for medical treatment.

By around 9 p.m., the scene had been cleared and normal traffic flow returned to the busy intersection.

Updates on the status of those injured in the accident will be provided as more information becomes available.
