Some say art is where you find it, and in Portsmouth you can find it at Shawnee Art and Hobby Supplies on Market Street in the growing Boneyfiddle artists’ district.
Ron Riepenhoff is an art seller who has also been working at Market Street Hardware since 2001, slowly building an inventory of art and hobby supplies. When owner Mark Harris decided to focus his attention more on the hardware store, he agreed to rent space upstairs to Riepenhoff for his art and hobby supplies. Shawnee Art and Hobby Supplies was created, and within a month has already gained hundreds of followers on its Facebook page.
“I’ve been in art for 40 years or so, and I’ve taken care of this and some other things,” Riepenhoff said. “We thought it would be in both of our interests if we split this up. I can take care of this and he would have the other part of it.”
The hobby shop already has a large selection of paints (oil, watercolors, craft paints), pencils, pens and markers, inks, sketchpads, drawing boards, painting canvases, pottery kits, model cars and trains and much more.
“We’re getting ready to add another four-foot section here and we’ll fill that up too,” Riepenhoff said.
Having the supply shop downtown is a great location for local artists — in the budding Boneyfiddle art district near the university.
“I had several artists tell me they were glad I was able to keep it here,” he said. “I’ve had a couple of people already ask for certain things, so I may be getting more things in that people need.”
Shawnee Art and Hobby Supplies is located on the second floor of Market Street Hardware, at 217 Market St., in Portsmouth. They can be found on Facebook, or by calling 740-353-8959.
