A Wheelersburg woman is charged with child endangering after officials say she injured a child by striking the child in the face several times. Arrested was Amber Sheets, 24, of Franklin Furnace.
Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said his office was contacted by Scioto County Children Services on Tuesday wanting to report a possible child abuse that occurred on Cartro Road in Franklin Furnace.
Sheriff Marty V. Donini said detectives were able to obtain information to file a report which resulted in obtaining photographs of the 8-year-old victim along with statements. Detectives report that the victim was removed from the suspect and placed with a family member.
Donini said detectives have been looking for the suspect who was located on Thursday when she appeared at juvenile court for a hearing. During this investigation, it was determined that the suspect did strike the victim several times in the face causing injuries.
Sheets has been charged with one count of Endangering Children a felony of the third degree, is being held on a $5,000 bond, and was scheduled to appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court Friday morning.
“Basically people need to keep their eyes open, if they are a child care provider or a school official, or anybody, if the child has injuries that doesn’t seem like a normal child injury, such as a black eye, or bruises all over their face, that’s not a normal injury if a child hasn’t been in an accident,” Scioto County Sheriff’s Detective Jodi Conkel said. “Attitude is another thing to look for. Lots of times kids will talk about it. Maybe their demeanor changes.”
Conkel said children should be taught to report any abuse.
“They should tell any law enforcement, Children Services, or a school official,” Conkel said. “You can never go wrong reporting it to law enforcement, because they’re going to get it to the appropriate people.”
Donini said anyone with information regarding the case can contact Conkel at 740-351-1091. He said all calls will remain anonymous.
