After a long hiatus, football has returned to New Boston Municipal Stadium as the Southern Ohio Spartans embark on their first season in the Northern Frontier Football League.

According to Spartans Owner Dusti Mogan, the Southern Ohio Spartans Football Club (SOSFC) has a bigger agenda than football.

“We are here to help the community,” Mogan said.

SOSFC has started an initiative to help area pee-wee football programs. The Spartans will provide financial assistance on an annual basis to programs that need financial support.

Almost all pee-wee teams are self-funded. SOSFC feels that children have the right to utilize their talents regardless of cost, race or ethical background, according to Mogan.

In addition to helping pee-wee football programs, the Spartans are hosting a fundraiser game at 7:30 p.m. July 6, which is called “Challengers Night Out.” The proceeds from the game will help send the District 11 Challenger League to their state tournament.

On the field, the Spartans have already surpassed expectations in their inaugural season. With five games remaining, The Spartans have a record of 2-3, which includes a win in the opening contest of the new campaign against the Clermont Grizzlies.

“Though we are a first year team, we are very hopeful in ending with a winning season,” Mogan said.

Regardless of football accomplishments, Mogan has the bigger picture in mind.

“Being a service to the community makes all of my players winners in my eyes as well as my coaches eyes,” Mogan said. “We have a great set of athletes. They came from miles away to be part of something great.”
