In a battle of unbeatens Saturday night, the Kentucky Warriors fought off a late surge from the Cincinnati Hawks to prevail 26-20 at Spartan Stadium.
The night belonged to Jordan Schankweiler, who went on to score three touchdowns for the Warriors in the win. The tailback had rushing scores of nine, three and five yards respectively on his way to a 173-yard night on the ground on 36 carries.
Despite a fumble that led to a touchdown and the opening quarter’s only points, Kentucky battled back with 10-straight points but fell behind late in the half to go into the locker room with a 14-10 deficit.
Schankweiler’s second score of the game came 45 seconds into the second half and gave the Warriors the lead for good. Snook Martin’s safety late in the third and Schankwiler’s finally tally in the fourth were all of the host’s points on the evening.
The rest of the Kentucky squad was held to relatively pedestrian numbers on the night. Justin Lunsford was 8-of-26 passing for 104 yards and an interception while Chance Freeman was his favorite target, going for 33 yards on just a pair of catches.
Justin Selby and Clyde Manuel led the team in tackles with seven each. Selby also had a team-high three sacks.
The Warriors are on the road Saturday to Cincinnati to take on the Tri-State Sharks.
