Portsmouth Elk Lodge #154 celebrated its 2013 Youth Program with a banquet to acknowledge and award two Jake Frowine Memorial scholarships along with an Ohio Elk scholarship. The Ohio Elk scholarship was provided by the National Elk Foundation program after being forwarded by the local lodge through the district review program on up to the state Elk level.
Annually the Elks award scholarships and it is a simple task to apply. The next application time period will be announced at the schools.
The annual local Elk Hoop-Shoot competition was conducted in December 2012 with good representation by local youths. Advancing to the Elk District level were Breanna Cau of South Webster of the 10-11 girls with a District winning score of 20 of 25. A Regional shootout was determined a one basket loss for Breanna.
Hunter Berry of Lucasville Valley advanced to the District in the 12-13 year old class with a runner up score 20 of 25 vs. a 21 of 25 basket winning shoot. He will be eligible to return next year to compete.
Other local winners were Ally Coriell 8-9 girls class, Gavin Baker 8-9 boys class, Collin Coriell 10-11 boys class, Madison Cook 12-13 Girls class.
