The Lewis County Kentucky Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal accident which claimed the life of a South Shore man in Garrison on Friday afternoon. Killed in the collision between a motorcycle and a van was David Watkins, 36, of South Shore, Ky.

Lewis County Sheriff Johnny Bivens said shortly after 1 p.m. the Lewis County Sheriff Dispatch Center received a report of a two vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of Kentucky 1306 and Kentucky 10 (AA Highway) in Garrison. Investigators said a 2005 Dodge Caravan, operated by Cheri Pack, of Garrison, was traveling west on Kentucky 10, preparing to make a left turn onto Kentucky 1306, when a 1995 Kawasaki Vulcan 750 motorcycle, operated by Watkins, attempted to pass Pack. The motorcycle struck the Dodge Caravan in the left front of the vehicle, and rolled several times before coming to rest in the opposite shoulder. Watkins, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene by Lewis County Deputy Coroner Amanda Clark. No other injuries were reported.

Bivens said, according to witnesses, speed may have been a contributing factor in the accident. The accident remains under the investigation by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, who was assisted by King’s Daughters Medical Transport and Garrison Fire and Rescue.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at the Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore, Ky. Burial will be in Harr Cemetery in South Shore. Friends may call at the Roberson Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour on Wednesday.
