Earlier this month, authorities from Scioto and Lawrence Counties identified a man suspected of robbing Charter One Bank in Wheelersburg on April 5 and of robbing the US Bank location in Proctorville April 8. On Wednesday, the search for that man ended when authorities located Elvis P. Kerns, 34, of Wheelersburg in Texas and arrested him.
Kerns had been connected to both robberies because of the similar behavior and methods exhibited during each instance. As a result of a joint investigation by the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Kerns was identified as the suspect in both robberies and a warrant for his arrest was issued.
While Kerns was apparently on the run following the Proctorville robbery, Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said his detectives were working several leads and received information that Kerns was possibly hiding in Seguin, Texas. Detectives contacted the Seguin Police Department Wednesday and officers responded to a residence suspected of sheltering Kerns. Officers made a forceful entry into the residence and arrested Kerns at approximately 5:16 p.m. Wednesday.
Kerns is being held without bond and will be extradited back to Ohio on charges of aggravated robbery and parole violation. Donini said more charges could be presented to a Scioto County grand jury at a later date.
The Sheriff’s Office asks that anyone with information concerning this robbery to please contact Detective Jodi Conkel at 740-351-1091. All calls will remain anonymous.
