Two sources say they expect charges against Reece Frasure, 50, of South Shore, Ky., to be changed from assault to murder. A spokesman at the Greenup County Sheriff’s Office said the increase in the charge comes as a result of the death of Michael Gillespie, 31, of Lewis County, Tuesday afternoon at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington.
Greenup County Sheriff Keith Cooper said Frasure and Gillespie were involved in an altercation at Frasure’s home on Micah’s Walk Road about 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Cooper said that is when Frasure pulled out a steak knife and stabbed Gillespie in the chest. He was flown to St. Mary’s where he had apparently been on life support since the stabbing on March 27.
In addition to the Sheriff’s spokesman, Commonwealth Attorney Mel Leonhart reportedly told WSAZ-TV that the charge against Frasure will now be upgraded to murder and will be present to a grand jury once the medical examiner’s report is completed.
Cooper said Frasure has a lengthy criminal history.
