For the second time in four months, Naismith Memorial Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins visited Scioto County.
In Monday’s trip, the man nicknamed “The Human Highlight Film” spoke with area residents at SOMC’s Friends Center on diabetes awareness. Wilkins, a Type 2 Diabetic, is an ambassador for Norvo Nordisk, a company that focuses on diabetic supplies.
“I think the biggest thing is to be proactive and not wait until basically bad happens with your health,” Wilkins said prior to his public speech. “My whole thing is prevention, try to educate people on diet and exercise.”
Wilkins learned of his condition 13 years ago, shortly after he retired from the NBA. It was a life-altering experience for him.
Among the things Wilkins said would be helpful for people with their diet is to include greens, non-fried chicken, fish and a gallon of water throughout each day. Since his diagnosis, Wilkins revealed he has not consumed a glass of orange juice and doesn’t miss the drink.
One way to get a good workout routine, according to Wilkins, is to do interval work on a treadmill. His example is to either increase or decrease the speed every two minutes for a 20-minute workout.
Wilkins will be in town Tuesday to speak to various schools about diabetes prevention before flying to Philadelphia to rejoin his full-time employers, the Atlanta Hawks, as they take on the 76ers. Wilkins is the Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Hawks.
Prior to his visit into the area, Wilkins did take in the atmosphere associated with the festivities that accompanied this weekend’s men’s basketball Final Four. The Division I games were played at the Georgia Dome, home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, while the Division II and III Final Fours were played at Philips Arena, the home of the Hawks.
“It was fun though, myself along with a lot of retired guys did some appearances down there for the Final Four,” Wilkins said. “A lot of guys were in town.”
