Tennis opened up the spring season with a convincing 8-1 victory over St. Catharine Wednesday morning at the Portsmouth Tennis Academy. The Bears (1-0, 1-0 MSC) won their spring debut under first-year head coach Rob Appell thanks to a sweep of the doubles competition and five singles victories.
The only doubles match that was actually contested came at No. 1 where Ashley Fischer and Ashley O’Neill did not allow a game to their counterparts. In the other two matches, the pairings of Kyra Keeton and Shelbie Wulfekamp at No. 2 and Aubrey Johnson and Abbi Morrow at No. 3 each received walkover victories.
In singles play, Johnson picked up her first collegiate tennis victory in her first match at No. 3 by allowing just one game over the course of her straight set victory, winning 6-0, 6-1. Wulfekamp moved all the way up to No. 2 in the Bears’ lineup and picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory. The only set back of the day came at No. 1 singles. Keeton pulled out a hard-fought 7-6 opening set. However, her opponent would came back with a 6-3 victory in the second set before taking the 10-point tiebreak that would decide the match, 10-7.
In the other three singles matches, Fischer, Megan Dunham and Morrow each received walkover victories at Nos., 4, 5, and 6, respectively.
The Bears will back on the courts Sunday, March 17 at Pikeville. That match will begin at 2 p.m.
