ATHENS —South Webster coach Steven Ater thought Seth Goddard played a phenominal defensive game in Tuesday’s Division IV Southeast District Semifinal despite an off night shooting.

But in Saturday night’s final, the senior found his touch as he went off for 25 points and was only bested by teammate Levi Cook’s game-high 26 as the No. 2 Jeeps defeated No. 5 Leesburg Fairfield 72-57 at Ohio University’s Convocation Center. South Webster wins its second district title in four years and will take on Notre Dame in Tuesday’s regional semifinals.

“We ran a play to get him a shot on the first play and he knocked it down,” Ater said. “From there on out, he just had all of the confidence in the world.”

The Jeeps never trailed in the contest but were tied on two occasions. With each run the Lions tried to make, South Webster responded, usually with a 3-pointer. Goddard had five of the team’s seven.

“They weren’t going to be denied tonight,” Ater said. “I love that about those guys.”

What helped the Jeeps chances was taking Fairfield’s Quentin Williams out of the game. Cook took two charges on Williams in the first half and the Lions senior picked up his third foul in the final stages of the half. He still led Fairfield with 20 in his last game.

“When you make (Williams) more of a shooter and he can’t attack like he wants to, he’s going to be easier to defend,” Ater said. “It was just a great team effort.”

Now South Webster’s attention moves on to the Notre Dame Titans, who defeated East 49-46 earlier Saturday night. The game guarantees a team from Scioto County to be in the regional finals.

“It shows you how good Scioto County basketball is,” Ater said. “Notre Dame’s had a phenominal season, they’re well-coached, they’ve got great athletes, they shoot it well. It’s going to be a tough task.”
