An unidentified driver fled the scene of a single-car accident that resulted in that vehicle resting partially in the bedroom of a Portsmouth residence Monday evening.

The Portsmouth Police Department responded to a call at 1110 13th Street in Portsmouth, where a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero had crashed into the rear of a residence, leaving extensive damage to the home.

According to the Portsmouth Police Department report, road conditions were dry when the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero was travelling eastbound behind the residence.

The vehicle struck the rear of the home, collapsing the east and west walls and disabling the vehicle. In addition, the power meter was damaged resulting in a live wire. AEP was contacted and a representative responded to the scene.

Maxine Malone, Executive Director of Portsmouth Inner City Development Corporation who manages the property, came to the scene. Malone said there was insurance for the residence and said she would confer with the police department.

The vehicle was registered to Melvin Mutter, who — according to the PPD — said he had let his son, Terry Mutter, borrow the vehicle a little more than a week ago.

Winston Garner, who resides at the 13th Street residence, said he was in the living room Monday evening when he heard a loud noise at the back of his home.

Garner said he jumped up to see what the noise was and called 911 as he went down the hallway.

“When I went back to check to see what was going on, there was so much dust, but I could see headlights,” Garner said. “By the time I got back to the bedroom, there was a car in my house.”

Garner said the driver of the vehicle fled the scene. Garner said an unidentified witness of the crash told him that they saw two young women running away from the vehicle.

According to the PPD, the driver of the vehicle is still unknown.

Garner said that he was was not hurt and did not have to undergo any type of medical attention. He said he was just glad that his children were not in the home at the time of the accident.
