Eastern reclaims SOC I supremacy

For the third time in four years, Eastern claims the SOC I boys basketball championship with a 64-51 makeup road win over East.


Chad Lands led the Eagles with 31 points, four assists and three steals while Tavares Pickett added 13 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. Josh Thaker finished with 13 points and seven rebounds in the win.


Patrick Bias was one of three Tartans in double figures with a team-high 21 points. Justin Crager added 14 and Tyler Bradford chipped in with 10 in the loss. Eastern, a No. 1 seed in the upcoming Division IV Southeast District Tournament, will take on the winner of the No. 9 South Gallia-No. 8 Ironton St. Joseph contest Feb. 27 at Meigs High School.

Piketon 73, Peebles 51

Host Piketon will enter the Division III Southeast District Tournament on a strong note after Saturday night’s 73-51 nonconference win over Peebles.

Craigen Moore and Zach Farmer each had 22 points to pace the Redstreaks. Beau Justice led the Indians with 19 points while Mason Johnson had 14 and Trent Arey chipped in with 13.

No. 2 Piketon will take on the winner of the No. 10 Adena-No. 7 Westfall contest Feb. 23 at Waverly’s Downtown Gymnasium. No. 3 Peebles will play the winner of the No. 11 Northwest-No. 6 Lynchburg-Clay game right after the Redstreaks.

West finishes its final week of the regular season with wins in two of its three games as the Senators defeated host Adena 55-44 in a nonconference tilt.

JB Travis led West with 15 points while Zach Bolton and Michael Hafer each racked up a dozen. The No. 6 Senators enter Division III Southeast District Tournament play Tuesday with a game against No. 11 Rock Hill at Jackson.

Jayllen Carter led the Trojans with 19 points in the loss. No. 7 Portsmouth will play No. 10 Wheelersburg Monday night at Jackson High School in a Division III Southeast Sectional Semifinal.
