Indians pounce on Tigers for SOC II share

The SOC II title will be split Lucasville Minford Road as for the second-straight year, the Valley Indians claim at least a share of the crown with a 73-37 home win over Waverly.

Valley jumped out on the Tigers early and often as the Indians recorded 21 steals on the night. Freshman Bryan Rolfe sent his seniors out on a winning note in their final home game as he checked in with 17 points, five assists and two steals. He was tied with Waverly’s Phillip Hart for the game-high mark in scoring.

Valley also had double-digit scoring marks from Jordan West (13 points), Will Howard and Hayden Dunn (11 each). Dunn added six rebounds and four assists while Howard chipped in with five rebounds and three steals in his home finale.

Eric Rinehart finished with a dozen for the Tigers. Valley will rest and as a No. 3 seed in the Division III Southeast District Tournament, will wait until next Saturday to play the winner of the No. 11 Rock Hill-No. 6 West contest at Jackson for a sectional title. The semifinal game will take place Tuesday evening.

Waverly, who enters the Division II Southeast District Tournament as a No. 9 seed, will play No. 8 Circleville Tuesday night at Chillicothe Southeastern.

Eastern 73, Western 21

Host Eastern claimed at least a share of the SOC I title Friday night with a 73-21 win over Pike County rival Western on Senior Night.

Chad Lands led the Eagles with 20 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals in two-and-a-half quarters of action. Teammate Tavares Pickett added 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Nick Shanks paced the Indians with four points. Eastern can claim the SOC I outright Saturday night with a win at East. Western is a No. 9 seed and will play No. 8 Clay Tuesday at Valley in a Division IV Southeast Sectional Semifinal while the Eagles are a top seed and will take on the winner of the No. 9 South Gallia-No. 8 Ironton St. Joseph game Feb. 27 at Meigs.
