The Portsmouth girls basketball team will return to the state of Ohio Wednesday with the 2012 KSA Events runner-up trophy.

The Trojans finished second in this weekend’s recently-concluded tournament to North Palm Beach (Fla.) Benjamin High School, who took Monday morning’s 61-42 championship game. But no matter how Portsmouth finished, coach Tyson Phillips said the weekend served its purpose.

“It was an outstanding trip,” Phillips said. “The competition down here was really good so I’ll hope it’ll prepare us.”

Peighton Williams led the Trojans with 16 points. Jada Jenkins added 11 against one of the Sunshine State’s best girls hoops teams. Williams was named team MVP as her squad erased a 24-3 deficit at one point to make it a 36-32 contest.

Phillips said with all of the levels of clearance his team went through for this tournament, it didn’t seem like they were in a high school tournament.

“You feel like you’re a college team playing,” Phillips said. “…It’s just a first-class resort”

Portsmouth will fly north Wednesday and return to the friendly confines of its home gym Saturday to host Logan.
