On Nov. 18 the Young Spirits Dance Group held a celebration at Beulah Baptist Church in Portsmouth to mark their 10th anniversary.
“The Young Spirits Dance Group focuses on individual and group development reminding the youth of their skills and abilities. However, as a team, the focus is to give back to the community reminding our community members of our respect for their wisdom, value, and place in our community and families,” said Marcia Harris, Young Spirits Program Director.
She said the group travels to area nursing homes and performs and interacts with the residents.
“The Young Spirits has been blessed with great community support including Beulah Baptist Church, our surrounding churches, community businesses and organizations. We are often reminded it takes a village to raise a child, and the Portsmouth community members have supported this group and are the reason Young Spirits are still performing today.”
The Young Spirits original dance members were: Wayne Johnson, Dasia Kennedy, Andrea White, Jasmine Johnson, Kyla Parker, Paige Parker, Landi Johnson, Aija Johnson, Donika Lee, and Faythe Lee.
According to Harris, other members who joined shortly after included Tyler Mallory, Alyssa Vaughn, Dina Smith, Makai Dixon, Sequoria McClure, Kristian White, Ciera Rogers, Alleria Dorsey, Mya Williams, and Blaine Bradford.
Harris said as a part of the celebration held on the 18th a number of workshops was held.
She said during the celebration a number of the original dancers returned to perform along with current members of the group.
