SSU Sports Information
Shawnee State softball has been picked to finish fourth in the Mid-South in the annual preseason poll amongst the conference coaches.
Lindsey Wilson, the 2012 regular season and tournament champions was a near unanimous pick to repeat as they received nine of the 11 first-place votes. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams in the poll.
Campbellsville received the other two first-place votes and was picked to finish second, while Georgetown was picked third. Shawnee State and Cumberland University rounded out the top five in the preseason picks.
The Bears return six of their eight field players that started at least 20 games last season and all three of their pitchers that saw time in the circle. Included in that lineup are all four of the team’s All-MSC selections from a season ago (Katy Bender, Ericka Leighty, Ali Thompson and Kirsti Yates).
The 2013 season will be the 22nd in the Hall of Fame Career of head coach Ralph Cole. He currently ranks 10th on the all-time wins list amongst active NAIA coaches with a career record of 566-283.
Shawnee State finished last season with 29 wins against just 11 losses. The Bears went 16-6 in conference play and finished third in the regular season standings. SSU then went 2-2 in the MSC Tournament after being upset in the opening round.
Softball will open its 2013 campaign on February 22 with a doubleheader at Midway. The Bears will also make the trip to Florida in early March. The first chance to watch the team on its home field will be March 15 against Madonna.
