Among those looking to earn a little extra income during the holiday season are senior citizens — and Mature Services is a local company training older residents how to use computers and find jobs.
Mature Services, Inc., is the home agency out of Akron, Ohio, that has multiple services in the Akron office, such as a senior citizens center, nutrition sites and senior employment. The Senior Employment Center is the local component for that service. They are also known as Employment and Training Solutions for Seniors.
“The program assists people who are 55 and older with work experience at a not for profit agency,” Diane Boster, project director, said. “That’s where the community service aspect comes in the program. They are paid for 20 hours a week at minimum wage to be assigned at a not for profit agency, such as Portsmouth Metropolitan Housing Authority, the village of New Boston, Potter’s House, Veterans Helping Veterans, Senior Citizens Adult Day Care Center, the Nutrition Kitchen, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Sierra’s Haven, and others.”
In addition, Boster said there are those who work at the center, such as those who answer the phones, who are also part of the program.
“We also have a training specialist, Russ Hicks, who just started in November,” Boster said. “He works on, what we call, job-seeking skills, job readiness skills and computer training for the individuals in the program so that they can learn how to do online applications. We also work with them to update their resume, and with computer skills based on the type of employment they are seeking.”
Boster said anyone interested in participating, or needing more information, may call their office at 740-353-5238.
“Basically they need to go through an interview process. We are an income-based program,” Boster said. “So, they would need to provide documentation about their income. Then we would have to do an evaluation to determine their job interests, additional training needed for employment, as well as to determine whether they are eligible income-wise.”
